Health Insurance - Brevard County School Board is self insured. That is to say that we do not
contract with any insurance carrier for our primary health insurance. We maintain an Insurance
Trust fund that pays our employees medical claims. Although this is much more cost effective
that contracting for health insurance, we are still challanged each year with rising health care
costs. Our annual claims are around $65 million per year.

I have been working hard for almost 2 years to bring health clinics to Brevard for all school
employees. However, although I finally got the rest of my board to recognize the benfits to health
clinics, they have chosen to only look at partnering with local walkin clinics. I fail to see how this
model will benifit anybody. I especially don't see how this model will help curb medical costs.
